Pipedream Dropbox steps in n8n

Updated 2026-10-21 · 3 min read · n8n: Dropbox (Native n8n node)

Dropbox workflows on Pipedream move files around: an email attachment lands in a folder, a new file is sent to OCR or an LLM, a shared link goes to Slack. n8n has a native Dropbox node for files and folders. There is no trigger node, which is the main rebuild point.

The n8n side

Dropbox node (n8n-nodes-base.dropbox):

Resource Operations
File Copy, Delete, Download, Move, Upload
Folder Copy, Create, Delete, List (files and folders), Move
Search Query

Uploads take a binary property from the previous node (for example a Gmail attachment or an HTTP Request download).

There is no Dropbox trigger node.

What maps where

Pipedream (app dropbox) In n8n Status
Upload a File File → Upload manual
Upload Multiple Files File → Upload, one item per file manual
Download File to TMP File → Download (binary, no /tmp) manual
Create folder Folder → Create manual
Search files and folders Search → Query manual
List All Files/Subfolders in a Folder Folder → List manual
Move a File/Folder File → Move or Folder → Move manual
Create/Update a Share Link HTTP Request → sharing endpoint manual
New File, New Folder, New or Modified File or Folder (webhook-based) Schedule Trigger + Folder → List + Remove Duplicates, or webhook manual

The converter has no Dropbox mapping yet. Steps arrive as placeholders with their props in a comment. Code steps that read /tmp files written by Download File to TMP need rework: in n8n, pass the binary along instead.

Dropbox credentials in n8n

  • Access token: generated on the Dropbox app page; quick for tests.
  • OAuth2: recommended for production. Register an app at the Dropbox App Console with n8n's redirect URL.

In both, set App Access Type to match the app: App Folder sees only /Apps/<app name>, Full Dropbox sees everything. Paths in Pipedream props may assume the other type.

Replacing the Instant file trigger

Option 1, polling: Schedule Trigger every few minutes → Folder → List → Remove Duplicates (key = file id + rev). Option 2, webhook: register a webhook URL in the Dropbox App Console (the n8n Webhook node must answer the GET challenge by echoing the challenge query parameter), then call list_folder/continue with a stored cursor to get the changes. Option 1 is simpler for most workflows.

Typical migration: attachments to Dropbox

Pipedream: Gmail New Attachment → Dropbox Upload a File (/Invoices/{{filename}}). n8n: Gmail Trigger (Download Attachments on) → Dropbox → File → Upload (File Path /Invoices/{{ $binary.attachment_0.fileName }}, Binary Property attachment_0).

Dropbox migration pitfalls

  • 150 MB upload limit. Single uploads must be under 150 MB; larger files need an upload session (start, append, finish) via HTTP Request.
  • 50-user production rule. Once an app links 50 users, Dropbox gives it two weeks to apply for production approval or freezes it.
  • Path case. Dropbox paths are case-insensitive but returned with original casing; compare path_lower.

How to move your Dropbox workflows

  1. Export from Pipedream.
  2. Upload on /convert; the free report lists every Dropbox step and its props.
  3. Get the n8n JSON: 1 workflow is free; full export: $3 per workflow, $19 minimum — coming soon.

FAQ

Is there a Dropbox trigger in n8n?
No. Pipedream's New File and New Folder sources (webhook-based) become either a Schedule Trigger with Folder → List and Remove Duplicates, or a Dropbox app webhook pointed at an n8n Webhook node.
How do I replace Download File to TMP?
Use File → Download. n8n keeps the file as binary data on the item, so there is no /tmp path; the next node reads the binary property directly.
Access token or OAuth2?
Dropbox suggests the access token for testing and OAuth2 for production. The app access type in n8n (App Folder or Full Dropbox) must match the Dropbox app.
Do Dropbox steps convert automatically?
No. They arrive as placeholders with their props (paths, mode), and the report lists the Dropbox credential to create.
