Pipedream Discord steps in n8n

Updated 2026-10-21 · 3 min read · n8n: Discord (Native n8n node)

Discord shows up in Pipedream workflows in two ways: posting notifications into a channel (the discord app, usually through a channel webhook) and running bots (the discord_bot app). n8n's native Discord node handles both kinds of actions. What it does not have is a trigger, and that decides how bot workflows move.

The n8n Discord node

n8n-nodes-base.discord:

Resource Operations
Message Send, Send and Wait for Response, Get, Get Many, Delete, React with Emoji
Channel Create, Get, Get Many, Update, Delete
Member Get Many, Role Add, Role Remove, Ban, Unban, Kick, Timeout

There is no Discord trigger node in n8n.

What maps where

Pipedream In n8n Status
discord Send Message HTTP Request POST {DISCORD_WEBHOOK_URL} with content, username, avatar_url automatic
discord Send Message (Advanced), Send Message With File Discord → Message → Send (embeds, files) with Webhook or Bot credential manual
discord_bot Add Role, Change Nickname Discord → Member → Role Add / HTTP Request manual
discord_bot Create Guild Channel, Delete Channel Channel → Create / Delete manual
discord_bot Delete message Message → Delete manual
New Message (Instant), New Message in Channel, New Guild Member, Reaction Added No n8n trigger; see below manual
New Command Received (Instant) Discord interactions endpoint → n8n Webhook node manual

The channel webhook URL lived inside Pipedream's connected account; the converter makes it a variable so the step works as soon as you paste the URL.

Replacing Discord triggers

Discord delivers messages and member events over its Gateway (a websocket), not over HTTP. n8n's built-in nodes do not keep a Gateway connection open, so:

  • Slash commands: set your Discord application's Interactions Endpoint URL to an n8n Webhook node and answer with Respond to Webhook. You must verify Discord's request signature in a Code node.
  • Messages and members: run a small bot (or a community node) that forwards events to an n8n webhook, or poll a channel on a schedule with Message → Get Many.

Be clear about this before migrating a bot that lives on messages: it is the main manual part.

Credentials

n8n's Discord credential has three methods:

  • Webhook – posts to one channel; cannot read or respond.
  • Bot – a bot token from the Discord Developer Portal; needed for channels, members and reading messages. Enable the privileged intents you need (Server Members is recommended).
  • OAuth2 – still requires a bot token.

Pitfalls

  • Rate limits. 50 requests per second per bot globally; webhook limits are counted per webhook. More than 10,000 invalid requests (401, 403, 429) in 10 minutes earns a temporary IP ban, so stop loops that keep failing.
  • Mentions need numeric IDs (<@123…>), not names.
  • Embeds. Footer and fields need the node's Raw JSON option.
  • Role order. Ban, kick and timeout need the matching permission, and the bot's role must be above the target's role.

How to move your Discord workflows

  1. Export the workflows from Pipedream.
  2. Upload on /convert; the free report shows which Discord steps are automatic and which need a bot.
  3. Download the n8n JSON: 1 workflow is free; full export: $3 per workflow, $19 minimum — coming soon.

FAQ

Does Send Message convert automatically?
Yes, from the discord app. It becomes an HTTP Request that posts content, username and avatar to the channel webhook URL, stored in the variable DISCORD_WEBHOOK_URL.
Is there a Discord trigger in n8n?
No. To react to messages or new members you need a bot connection outside n8n's built-in nodes, or Discord interactions (slash commands) pointed at an n8n Webhook node.
Which credential type should I use?
Webhook if you only post to one channel; it cannot read or reply. Bot for anything else (channels, members, reading messages). OAuth2 also needs a bot token.
What happens to the Discord Bot app's actions?
Add Role, Create Channel, Delete Message and similar map to the Discord node with a Bot credential; they are rebuilt by hand from the props in the report.
