Pipedream Anthropic (Claude) steps in n8n

Updated 2026-10-21 · 3 min read · n8n: Anthropic (Native n8n node)

Pipedream's Anthropic app is small: a Chat action and a helper that lists models. Most workflows that use Claude on Pipedream do it in a Node.js code step with the Anthropic SDK or a plain fetch. Both paths have a clear home in n8n: the native Anthropic node, or a Code / HTTP Request node with the Anthropic credential.

The n8n Anthropic node

n8n-nodes-langchain.anthropic:

Resource Operations
Text Message a Model
Document Analyze Document
Image Analyze Image
File Upload File, Get File Metadata, List Files, Delete File
Prompt Generate Prompt, Improve Prompt, Templatize Prompt

For agent-style workflows, n8n also has the Anthropic Chat Model sub-node that plugs into the AI Agent node. There is no Anthropic trigger.

What maps where

Pipedream (app anthropic) In n8n Status
Chat Anthropic → Text → Message a Model manual, 1 node
List Model Options not needed; pick the model in the node drop
Code step with @anthropic-ai/sdk Code node; SDK listed as an npm package in the report automatic, review
Code step with fetch('https://api.anthropic.com/v1/messages') and this.anthropic.$auth.api_key Code node; key becomes the variable ANTHROPIC_API_KEY automatic
Code step using axios from @pipedream/platform Code node using this.helpers.httpRequest automatic

The npm question matters here. n8n Cloud does not allow external npm modules in the Code node; self-hosted n8n allows them only when NODE_FUNCTION_ALLOW_EXTERNAL lists the package. If a code step imports @anthropic-ai/sdk, either allow it on your server or replace the step with the Anthropic node or an HTTP Request node. The report flags each case.

Credentials

  1. Create a key in the Anthropic Console.
  2. n8n: Credentials → New → Anthropic, paste the key. A custom header is optional.
  3. On n8n Cloud you can use "Use Gateway credits" instead of your own key.

Pipedream never exports the key, so this step is always manual.

Typical migration: summarise long emails

Pipedream: Gmail New Email → code step (Anthropic SDK, messages.create) → Slack. n8n: Gmail Trigger → Anthropic (Message a Model, system prompt copied from the code) → Slack. Three nodes, no npm package to allow.

Pitfalls

  • Output shape. Pipedream's Chat action and the raw API return content[0].text; the n8n node returns its own structure. Check the expressions in the steps after it with one test run.
  • Rate limits. Anthropic limits requests per minute and input and output tokens per minute per model class, with a token bucket. A 429 may carry retry-after; a spend-limit 429 does not. Loops over many items need a Wait node or batching.
  • Model names. Copy the exact model ID the Pipedream step used; aliases change over time.
  • Long documents. For PDFs use Document → Analyze Document instead of pasting text into the prompt.

How to move your Anthropic workflows

  1. Export the workflows from Pipedream.
  2. Upload on /convert; the free report shows which Claude steps are code (automatic) and which are actions (manual).
  3. Download the n8n JSON: 1 workflow is free; full export: $3 per workflow, $19 minimum — coming soon.

FAQ

Is there an Anthropic node in n8n?
Yes. The Anthropic node can message a model, analyze documents and images, manage files and generate or improve prompts. There is also an Anthropic Chat Model sub-node for the AI Agent.
Does the Pipedream Chat action convert automatically?
Not yet. It arrives as a placeholder with the original model, system prompt and messages; you rebuild it with Anthropic → Text → Message a Model. Code steps that call the Messages API convert automatically.
Which credential do I need?
An Anthropic API key credential. The same credential works in the Anthropic node, the Anthropic Chat Model node and an HTTP Request node.
Is there an Anthropic trigger?
No, on either side. Pipedream's Anthropic app has no triggers either, so nothing is lost.
