Pipedream Airtable steps in n8n

Updated 2026-10-21 · 3 min read · n8n: Airtable (Native n8n node)

Airtable is a common "database" for Pipedream workflows: forms create records, scheduled jobs list and update them. n8n has a native Airtable node and a polling Airtable Trigger, and the converter handles the three most used actions and the new-record triggers.

The n8n side

Airtable node (n8n-nodes-base.airtable): Create, Create or Update (upsert), Delete, Get, Search and Update records; list bases and get a base schema. Search takes a formula filter; Update and Delete need a record ID or a column to match on.

Airtable Trigger: polls a table and fires for records whose Trigger Field (a Created time or Last modified time field) changed since the last poll. An optional formula narrows it down.

What maps where

Pipedream (app airtable_oauth) In n8n Status
Create Single Record HTTP Request POST /v0/{base}/{table} with fields (and typecast if set) automatic
Update Record HTTP Request PATCH /v0/{base}/{table}/{record} automatic
List Records HTTP Request GET with filterByFormula, maxRecords automatic, review pagination
Create Multiple Records, Create or Update Record Airtable → Create / Create or Update manual
Create Comment, Create Field, Create Table HTTP Request with the Airtable credential manual
New Record(s) Created, New or Modified Records, New or Modified Records in View Airtable Trigger, Trigger Field = Created / Last modified automatic node, set the field
New Field Created, New or Modified Field Schedule Trigger + HTTP Request to the base schema manual

The converted HTTP Request nodes use the predefined Airtable Personal Access Token credential, and keep Pipedream's field names, so expressions in later steps stay valid.

Credentials

  1. In Airtable, open the developer hub and create a Personal Access Token.
  2. Scopes: data.records:read, data.records:write, schema.bases:read. Add the bases (or the whole workspace) the workflows touch.
  3. n8n: Credentials → New → Airtable Personal Access Token API, paste it.

OAuth2 is available as well. The legacy API key was deprecated in February 2024 and no longer works.

Typical migration: form submissions to a CRM base

Pipedream: HTTP trigger → Create Single Record → Slack message. n8n: Webhook → Code (trigger) → HTTP Request (Airtable create) → HTTP Request (Slack). Two credentials; move the form's webhook URL.

Pitfalls

  • Rate limits. 5 requests per second per base and 50 per second across bases per token. After a 429, Airtable makes you wait 30 seconds. Loops over many records need batching (up to 10 records per create or update call) or a Wait node.
  • Pagination. List calls return up to 100 records per page with an offset. Enable pagination in the HTTP Request node or use the Airtable node's Return All.
  • Trigger field. The Airtable Trigger needs a Created time or Last modified time field in the table; add one if it is missing. The formula filter applies only to production polling, not to manual test runs.
  • Instant vs polling. Pipedream's Instant sources used Airtable webhooks, which expire after 7 days unless refreshed. The n8n trigger polls, so there is nothing to refresh, but expect up to one poll interval of delay.
  • Linked records are arrays of record IDs, not names. Keep that format when writing.

How to move your Airtable workflows

  1. Export the workflows from Pipedream.
  2. Upload on /convert; the free report shows the Airtable steps, the token to create and the pagination notes.
  3. Download the n8n JSON: 1 workflow is free; full export: $3 per workflow, $19 minimum — coming soon.

FAQ

Which Airtable actions convert automatically?
Create Single Record, Update Record and List Records (with filterByFormula and maxRecords). They become HTTP Request nodes with the n8n Airtable personal access token credential.
How does the Airtable Trigger work in n8n?
It polls the table and needs a Trigger Field, a Created time or Last modified time field, to know which records are new.
Which credential do I need?
A Personal Access Token with the scopes data.records:read, data.records:write and schema.bases:read, and access to the bases you use. OAuth2 is the alternative; the old API key no longer works.
Does List Records return all rows?
The Airtable API returns pages of up to 100 records. The converted step returns the first page; the report flags it so you can enable pagination or use the Airtable node's Return All.
