Pipedream alternatives: where to move your workflows
Updated 2026-10-21 · 5 min read
Pipedream Workflows shuts down on March 31, 2027, and Pipedream does not name a replacement. The right Pipedream alternative depends on what your workflows are made of. If they are mostly Node.js or Python code steps triggered by webhooks and schedules, you need a platform that runs real code, accepts HTTP requests and, ideally, lets you install packages. This page compares six options on exactly those points, with links to each vendor's own docs.

n8n
Best fit for: code-heavy Pipedream workflows that you want to keep visual.
n8n has a Code node for JavaScript and Python, a Webhook node with a Respond to Webhook node for custom responses, a Schedule Trigger, an HTTP Request node, and If, Switch and Merge nodes for branching. That covers most of what a Pipedream workflow does. It can be self-hosted for free (Community Edition) or used as n8n Cloud.
Watch out for:
- npm on Cloud. On n8n Cloud the Code node can load only
cryptoandmoment. External packages need self-hosted n8n: you install them in an extendedn8nio/runnersimage and allow-list them in the task runner config (docs). - Code model. n8n code works on arrays of items, not on
stepsand$. Pipedream steps either get rewritten or wrapped in a compatibility layer. - License. The Sustainable Use License allows internal business use and consulting, but it is fair-code, not OSI open source.
Cloud pricing is per workflow execution, not per step (n8n pricing). Head-to-head: Pipedream vs n8n. Hosting choice: n8n Cloud vs self-hosted.
Activepieces
Best fit for: teams that want an MIT-licensed visual builder.
Activepieces' core is MIT-licensed, with enterprise folders under a separate commercial license. Code steps are TypeScript, and the vendor says they run in a sandbox with npm packages allowed. Its pricing counts one credit per run, however many steps the run has, and there is a free self-hosted Community Edition.
Watch out for: no Python code steps, and fewer public docs on code-step limits than n8n. Three-way comparison: Pipedream vs Activepieces vs n8n.
Windmill
Best fit for: developers who think in scripts, not boxes.
Windmill runs scripts in many languages, including TypeScript, Python, Go and Bash. That makes it one of the few options that also covers Pipedream's Go and Bash steps. Dependencies are resolved from imports, and every script and flow gets a webhook automatically. It is AGPLv3 and self-hostable.
Watch out for: it is a developer platform first. Non-developers on your team may find n8n or Activepieces easier.
Trigger.dev
Best fit for: teams that would rather keep workflows in their own repository.
Trigger.dev tasks are TypeScript code in your codebase (docs), deployed and run by Trigger.dev or self-hosted. It is Apache 2.0. Runs have no maximum duration according to its pricing page.
Watch out for: there is no visual builder. Tasks start through the SDK or REST API; hosted webhook endpoints are documented as a private beta (docs). Until you have access, you put your own HTTP endpoint in front of it to replace a *.m.pipedream.net URL.
Zapier
Best fit for: simple app-to-app automations run by non-developers.
Code by Zapier runs JavaScript and Python and allows public npm packages on paid plans. Webhooks by Zapier is not on the Free plan (pricing). Billing is per task.
Watch out for: code steps have tight plan-dependent limits, and task-based billing gets expensive for high-volume webhooks. No self-hosting. Comparison: Pipedream vs Zapier.
Make
Best fit for: visual, data-mapping-heavy scenarios.
Make has a Code app for JavaScript and Python. It is in open beta, on paid plans only, and custom libraries need Enterprise. Billing is in credits.
Watch out for: code steps have a 30 second limit below Enterprise and cost credits per second of execution. Not a good home for workflows built mostly from code.
How to choose
- Count your code steps and npm imports. Few code steps: any option works. Many code steps with packages: self-hosted n8n, Activepieces, Windmill or Trigger.dev.
- List your webhook senders. Every one of them will need a new URL, whatever you pick.
- Decide who maintains it. Developers only: Windmill or Trigger.dev are fine. Mixed team: n8n or Activepieces.
- Decide on hosting. If you can't run servers, compare the cloud plans of n8n, Activepieces and Windmill.
Our free report answers the first two points from your Pipedream export in a few seconds, in your browser. It is built for one target: n8n. If n8n is your pick, the migration guide covers the rest.
Migration effort
None of these platforms imports Pipedream workflows, so a migration is a conversion or a rebuild. For n8n, our converter automates most of it. The report and 1 workflow are free. Full export: $3 per workflow, $19 minimum — coming soon. See pricing. Credentials, secrets and webhook senders stay manual on every platform, because Pipedream does not export them.

FAQ
- What is the best Pipedream alternative?
- It depends on your workflows. For a visual builder with JavaScript and Python code steps and a self-hosted option, n8n is the closest match. For TypeScript-first teams, Trigger.dev or Windmill fit better. Zapier and Make suit low-code workflows.
- Is there an open-source Pipedream alternative?
- Yes. Activepieces is MIT-licensed (with separate enterprise code), Windmill is AGPLv3, Trigger.dev is Apache 2.0. n8n is source-available under the Sustainable Use License (fair-code) and free to self-host.
- Can any of these tools import Pipedream workflows?
- No. Each platform imports only its own format. A Pipedream export has to be converted or rebuilt by hand.
- Which alternative supports npm packages in code steps?
- Self-hosted n8n (installed in the task runner image and allow-listed), Activepieces, Windmill and Trigger.dev. Zapier allows public npm packages on paid plans. n8n Cloud allows only crypto and moment.
