Pipedream Gmail steps in n8n
Updated 2026-10-21 · 3 min read · n8n: Gmail (Native n8n node)
Gmail is both a trigger and an action in many Pipedream workflows: a new email starts the workflow, or the workflow ends by sending one. n8n has a native Gmail node and a polling Gmail Trigger, and the converter covers the send action and the common email triggers.
The n8n side
Gmail node (n8n-nodes-base.gmail):
| Resource | Operations |
|---|---|
| Message | Add Label, Delete, Get, Get Many, Mark as Read, Mark as Unread, Remove Label, Reply, Send |
| Thread | Add Label, Delete, Get, Get Many, Remove Label, Reply, Trash, Untrash |
| Draft | Create, Delete, Get, Get Many |
| Label | Create, Delete, Get, Get Many |
Gmail Trigger: event Message Received, polling on Poll Times, with filters (search query, labels, read status).

Why not the Gmail node for Send? Pipedream's Send Email accepts arrays of recipients, a display name and HTML in one step; building the raw MIME message keeps that behaviour exactly and avoids the n8n attribution footer. After the first green run you can swap in Gmail → Message → Send if you prefer the form.
Credentials
Create a Gmail OAuth2 credential:
- In Google Cloud, enable the Gmail API.
- Create an OAuth client (Web application), add the redirect URL from the n8n credential window, connect.
- On n8n Cloud, the managed Google sign-in is available instead.
A Service Account works with Gmail only through domain-wide delegation in Google Workspace; for personal Gmail use OAuth2. Pipedream's Gmail grant does not carry over.
Typical migration: leads from email to sheet
Pipedream: New Email Matching Search (from:forms@site.com) → OpenAI Chat (extract name, phone) → Google Sheets Add Single Row.
n8n after conversion: Gmail Trigger (same query) → HTTP Request (OpenAI) → Code → HTTP Request (Sheets append). Three credentials: Gmail, OpenAI, Google Sheets.
Pitfalls
- Unread only. The trigger reads unread mail by default. If another client marks mail as read first, the trigger never sees it; change the filter.
- Poll volume. Up to 10 emails per poll by default, 50 at most. A backlog drains over several polls.
- 401 errors usually mean the Gmail API is not enabled in the project, or delegation is missing for a service account.
- Footer. Turn off the n8n attribution in every Gmail Send node you add by hand.
- No push. Pipedream's instant Gmail sources used
users.watch, which must be renewed at least every 7 days and needs a Pub/Sub topic. n8n polls instead: simpler, slightly slower.
How to move your Gmail workflows
- Export the workflows from Pipedream.
- Upload on /convert for the free report: which Gmail steps are automatic, which credentials to create.
- Download the n8n JSON: 1 workflow is free; full export: $3 per workflow, $19 minimum — coming soon.

FAQ
- Which Gmail steps convert automatically?
- The Send Email action becomes a Code node that builds the MIME message plus an HTTP Request to the Gmail API send endpoint. Pipedream's New Email, New Labeled Email, New Attachment and search-based sources become a Gmail Trigger.
- Is the n8n Gmail Trigger instant?
- No, it polls on the schedule you set (Poll Times). It reads up to 10 emails per poll by default, at most 50.
- Why does n8n add a line at the bottom of my emails?
- The Gmail node appends an n8n attribution footer by default. Turn off Append n8n Attribution in the node options.
- Can I use a service account for Gmail?
- Only with domain-wide delegation in Google Workspace. n8n recommends OAuth2 for Gmail.
